Three neat things for you to look at:
(1) Charles Hatfield at Thought Balloonists wrote an excellent appreciation of J.H. Williams III, who is currently drawing an acclaimed run on Detective Comics. Hatfield wrote, "Williams is the new master of trick layouts, the one artist who is, month after month, doing more than anyone else to reinvigorate page design in mainstream comic books." That gives me an excuse to post this double-page spread that Williams did for 2008's Jonah Hex #35, below:
Love those bullet panels. And that the panels along the bottom bump up and down, as though the reader is riding along on the horse. Great stuff.
(2) Tucker Stone got all happy in this month's Advanced Common Sense. Those are always a high point of my month.
(3) The New York Times posted a list of the Best Illustrated Children's Books of 2009 that included All the World, by Liz Garton Scanlon and Marlee Frazee. This is an absolutely lovely book that I happened to pick up from our library this week to read to our kids. It has beautiful art and a very sweet message. Even if you don't have kids, it's worth checking out. Here's one image:
The Times also posted a 2009 Graphic Novels Gift Guide -- does anybody think this counts as their "Best Comics of 2009" list?
